Debate

Debate: Grades 8-12

Introduction to Debate is a one semester course (Fall semester only). This is ideal for individuals who are exploring the possibility of forming a debate club or who cannot make the time commitment necessary for competitive debate. Students can use this course to prepare for competition in the NCFCA debate league. However, Podium Power does not support a debate club.

This is an introductory class designed to help students learn the skills needed for policy debate and prepare for an in-house debate tournament. Students will learn the art of team policy debate. Skills in critical thinking, defending worthy ideas, attacking invalid ideas, persuasion and research will be developed.

The goals of this course are:

   1. Gain poise and confidence when speaking before an audience or   defending one’s opinion

   2. Improve skills in research, logic, organization, and writing

   3. Learn essential debate terminology

   4. Learn the structure of a policy debate

This course requires: high school level reading, writing, and analytical skills and access to the Internet.
