Speech Syllabus 2008-2009

Text:

  • A Guide to Public Speaking and Debate

Description:

  • This course includes instruction in oral interpretation, the fundamentals of public speaking, and an introduction to policy debate.
  • Oral Interpretation: Students will prepare and present readings from selected prose, and or poetry.
  • Fundamentals of Public Speaking: Students will research, write and deliver informative, persuasive, and demonstration speeches.
  • Policy Debate: Students will prepare for and participate in a mini debate. Students will learn the structure of a policy debate, research a topic, organize and write a case.
  • Competitive Speaking: Students will prepare at least 2 Individual Events (I. E.) from the NCFCA list and according to NCFCA rules. These speeches will be given in class. Students will have the option of entering these speeches in NCFCA tournaments. (IE list and rules: www.ncfca.org)

Goals:

  • Each student will improve his/her poise and confidence when speaking before an audience or defending his/her opinion.
  • Students will improve their skills in research, logic, organization, and writing.

Requirements:

  • Comply with all discipline rules
  • Complete all assignments on time and according to instructions
  • All readings and speeches should be 3-5 minutes in length unless otherwise specified.
  • Participation in NCFCA speech/debate tournaments is not required, but encouraged.

Evaluation: Students will be graded on the following:

  • Persuasive, informative, and demonstration speeches
  • Prose/poetry readings
  • Participation on the class debate
  • Tests when applicable

Field Trips: Debate students will join the government class to lobby the Texas Legislature. They will also have the opportunity to tour the Governor’s Mansion and Capitol with my other classes.

  • Tour the Texas Governor’s Mansion (fall)
  • Tour the Texas State Capitol (fall)
